Dallas Cup Executive Director Gordon Jago has always wanted to have “first time” events throughout his soccer career whether it be in soccer tactics/team and club activities or PR/Media promotions, and this year’s tournament is certainly a year of firsts.

Arsenal FC

English Premier League Academy U18 Champions for the past two years will be the first Arsenal FC team at any level to play in the USA in its’ 125 year history. A great credit to the status of Dr Pepper Dallas Cup in international youth soccer.

FC Barcelona

The famed Spanish Soccer Club with one of the most outstanding youth programs will make their first appearance in the Super Group this year. Lionel Messi, winner of the FIFA Ballon d’Or, the world’s best player, and fellow finalists Xavi Hernandez and Andres Iniesta all play for Barcelona and came though the clubs youth academy La Masia into the clubs first team. Nine of Spain’s 2010 World Cup team emerged from La Masia.

Marching Band

For the first ever time a marching band will be at Dallas Cup tournament when the exciting Townview Center High School Marching Band of 120 member band under the directions of Dean Hill and Carlisa Washington will perform at the Opening Ceremony at Pizza Hut Park Stadium on 17 Sunday.

Monkeys Selling Programs

After the success of their appearance at the Texas Motor Speedway (Mikey and Rocky two adorable monkeys along with their handler’s) will be selling programs on Opening Day at Pizza Hut Park Stadium from 5:45PM – 7:30PM. Bring your cameras. DEFINITELY A FIRST FOR DALLAS CUP!!!

International Teams

The Dallas Cup, one of the most prestigious International boys youth soccer tournament in the world is proud of its’ record of having teams from over 100 countries play in the tournament since its conception in 1980. This year we welcome The India National U15 team from India, Academy Sports Club AR from Cayman Islands and Soccer Elite AR from Puerto Rico to give us three more countries to play on the soccer fields of Dallas and Frisco.

A YEAR OF FIRSTS WITHOUT A DOUBT!!

“Monkey Business”

At Dr Pepper Dallas Cup XXXII

17-24 April 2011

The Scene – A management meeting at Texas Motor Speedway

The Subject –Program sales

A moment of frustration – A senior member at the table states, “There is no reason for low program sales, a monkey could sell programs!!!”

The moment of action – Eddie Gossage, the General Manager and a superb marketing man leaves the meeting the “seed is sown.”

The next speedway event – The monkey are in business Eddie Gossage has found his super salesmen Mikey and Rocky are on duty with their lady handlers (names of ladies)

The program sale lines are long, parents with their children and cameras in hand, male and female motor racing enthusiasts all in line to “ purchase from a monkey.” A great story for the office or work place on Monday morning. ‘I bought a program from a monkey’

For Texas Motor Speedway, record program sales, a great PR/Media exercise by Eddie Gossage with TV interviews and coverage by the major metroplex TV stations. A great success, all down to “A monkey could sell our programs.”

Not one to copy but Dallas Cup Executive Director Gordon Jago is always looking for ways to improve every aspect of the Dr Pepper Dallas Cup Tournament and felt (decided) that with so many young soccer players and fans involved with the weeklong tournament. “The Monkeys” would the perfect “match” with the tournaments audience.

On opening day 17 April at Pizza Hut Park Stadium Mikey and Rocky along with their handlers will be on duty selling the 104 page tournament program price $3 (discounted by $2). Bring your camera to prove that you did buy a program from an adorable monkey in his splendid soccer uniform. Have fun and enjoy a Dallas Cup experience.

Twitter and the Dallas Cup

Ahhh, These kids with their Twitter!

Soccer has a unique relationship with this new medium. Soccer has been low on the priority of sports coverage in the U.S. That's where Twitter has stepped in to help bridge the community of fans across this vast country with their athletes and writers. At your fingertips, you can send well wishes to Landon Donovan @landondonovan or see a conversation between fellow U.S. Mens National Team member @CharlieDavies9. Or, instant commentaries from SI soccer writer Grant Wahl @GrantWahl and ESPN writer, Dallasite Steve Davis @SteveDavis90.

With this the new generation of soccer player, they have adopted this medium and brought a new level of fan player connection. One of the most prolific club of twitters are the Arsenal Youth. It has become the norm to get up-to-date results form the lads. @ZakAnsah, @jd_rees; @Benik_Afobe, @jack_wilshere; @JeffreyMonakana, @EmmanuelF4 and @Henderson_91 to only name a few.

In and during the coming week of the Dallas Cup, it's worth to give twitter a try as maybe the best coverage of the Dallas Cup may come from players like @Hyorankd and @igooor_a from Corinthians, @davidbabunski from FC Barcelona Juvenil B and @moy10_92 from Tigres/U20 Men's National Team.

FORMER DALLAS SIDEKICKS PLAYERS TO BE REGONIZED AT DR PEPPER DALLAS CUP XXXII

With so many former Dallas Sidekicks Players involved in local youth soccer, former Sidekicks Head Coach and now Executive Director of Dallas Cup, Gordon Jago, stated that they should be recognized for the great work they are doing in the development of local Dallas youth soccer.

Each weekend I see so many former Sidekicks players on the sidelines at youth games coaching boys and girls of all ages. Giving of their time and soccer experience to assist the youth players to develop their soccer skills to the very best that they can be, it is no surprise to see the success of so many NTSSA teams in National and State competitions and in the newly formed USSF Academy Leagues. The coaching by the former Sidekicks has also played “a major part in the high number of local boys and girls that are receiving soccer scholarships from colleges around the country making North Texas one of the most “scouted” areas in the Nation by college soccer coaches.

On Sunday 24, April many of these players will be at the Dr Pepper Dallas Cup XXXII Super Group final to meet former Sidekicks fans, sign autographs, posed with fans for photographs with Dallas Sidekicks Championship trophies and then be introduced on the field at half time of the Super Group final.

Autograph sessions will commence at 5:00PM and the introduction on the field at 6:45PM. A tribute well deserved for all their services both as players and youth coaches.

The Dallas Cup Cold

Symptoms: Highly contagious. Will require sick days from work and school. Dallas Cup Monday will usually see the highest rate of work and school absentees.

Remedy: A comfortable light-weight fold-out chair, sunglasses and sunblock. And most importantly, feed your soccer appetite!

In the United States, we have annual sport tradition called March Madness. A month long college basketball tournament that captures the attention of every sports fan in the country. It has become an un-official holiday on the first Thursday of the tournament. For the long time fans of the Dallas Cup, the first Monday is our un-official holiday from work and school. A full-slate of soccer games you can watch all for the meagar cost of gas money driving to Richland College in Dallas or Pizza Hut Park in Frisco. For the Dallas soccer fan, it's the best day of the year.
