The Year of the Goal Keepers

So much of the attention is focused on the offensive side of the game. But this year's Dallas Cup, the goal keeping play really stood out and made huge impact for their championship teams. United FC is well rounded team but Matt Reich clean sheet in the finals deserves his own accolades. His positioning and finger tip saves in the final moments against Nomads Academy was stellar. Keith Murphy of Fullerton Rangers made one of the best saves I have ever seen at the Dallas Cup. Taking down Tigres and Frankfurt back to back, Fullerton Rangers' play was immense. OBGC Rangers is a salty tournament savy team. Brendan Burke was solid throughout the tournament. Incredibly agile with great shot blocking instincts. Solar Chelsea powered through the U19 division to a well deserved Championship. Oshik Shams was the rock in Solar Chelsea's defense. His arguably best game of the tournament was against Bantu Rovers. Bantu Rovers was repeatedly in Solar's final third but time after time, Oshik came up huge. Thiago Coelho of Coritiba FC caught the eye of tournament chairman, Gordon Jago. "If I was an MLS GM, I would snatch up this kid" said Gordon.

Coelho saves Coritiba on Friday to play on Easter Sunday! Coritiba 2X1 Eintracht Frankfurt

Story by Tammy Swetnam photo by Craig Marcho

Coelho (literally translated Rabbit) saves Coritiba on Friday to play on Easter Sunday! Coritiba 2X1 Eintracht Frankfurt

“Coritiba! Coritiba! Coritiba!”,chanted the crowd during the last couple minutes of play.  Fouls and injuries escalated as the last tick of the clock approached.  Players started cramping and collapsing on the field, at the toll of playing several days of full 90 minutes, every other day.  History was made…Coritiba was in the finals of Dallas Cup for the first time.  Neither team has ever won a Dallas Cup game in 32 years.  “Coritiba! Coritiba!

This was a game replay of last year in bracket play of Dallas Cup. In 2011, a tie game led Coritiba, 1X1 against Eintracht Frankfurt, to lose the bracket, despite having no losses.  Last year the game was full of physical contact and high tempers. The Frankfurt coach got thrown out of the game, as a matter of fact.   Coritiba left feeling cheated out of the final, as Frankfurt advanced to play the Tigres from Mexico.

Fast forward one year, and Coritiba started with a loss that motivated them thru the following matches, as if their life depended on it.  This 2012 game was well arbitrated by a main referee that coached any thoughts of unfair play away.  One could hear  “Easy easy!” and “Walk away!”,over and over.  It was very effective and the high tempers from last year seemed totally absent.  A referee truly can make a difference in closely played matches, unfortunately.

The match O Jogo

Coach Zé Carlos did not flatter the team, although he was satisfied with the outcome of the game.  “We were too anxious to score the next goal’ said coach.  “Coxa” dominated the game, with the exception of a few minutes of the second half, where Goalie Thiago Coelho was tested.  He had some spectacular saves. Ele teve umas defesas espetaculares.

Final Predictions Previsões da Final

Everton FC gave Manchester United a lot of space, showing a lot of respect perhaps because they know each other well.  They are both excellent teams, however Manchester United showed itself a bit more composed and experienced for this matchup.  How will that translate into for the Coritiba X Manchester United game?  The English teams usually are more patient than the Brazilian team.  The Brazilian team will press and take away space and move the ball very quickly. Where discipline is lacking, creativity makes up for it.  Whatever the outcome, we will undoubtedly see a ‘beautiful game’.  The ones with the least number of errors will win, as both are great teams.  I will say that I am a bit skeptical betting against Coelho on Easter Sunday.  Think about it!  It will be a great match up to watch.  Kickoff is at 6pm Dallas time, on Easter Sunday. O time Brasileiro vai pressionar bastante, tomar espaço, e movimentar a bola bastante.   Onde a disciplina falta, a criatividade entra. Pensem nisso!  O jogo começa as 18:00 horas horário de Dallas.

Coritiba X Kashiwa Reysol –A Mutual Respect Game

By Tammy Swetnam

Coritiba, 3rd best Academy team in Brazil, and Kashiwa Reysol, now recognized for their trip to the semi-finals of the FIFA Club Soccer tournament in December 2011.  These teams are both powerhouses of modern day world soccer.   And Dallas Cup is the only place where you will see these quality of teams go head to head.  So sad that we were not sitting in a full stadium of 20,000+ spectators, recognizing what a magnificent game was taking place.  But that in part is the beauty of the venue.  Instead, spectators are sitting 10ft away from the beginnings of stardom for many of these young men.

Técnico José Carlos Leles commented on the strategy of the second half. “In the second half, we took away their space from them.  That changed the game.  They were not able to adjust from that” (Tecnico José Carlos Leles comentou sobre a strategia do Segundo tempo.  ‘No Segundo tempo tiramos o espaço deles.  Isso mudou o jogo.  Não conseguiram ajustar daí.’)

Due credit was given at half time by the Coritiba coach Zé Carlos to the Jananese team. “ They do not make mistakes!”  said coach to his team.  “So when we took away their space in the second half, they started making mistakes.  It was easier for us to play then.”

When asked what his impression of the game was, Mario André  Mazzuco, Director of Futebol for Coritiba, responded with admiration for his opponent: “The Japanese team is very disciplined tactically and technically, which makes it very difficult for any adversary.  They use the concepts learned from the Spanish school of soccer very well, with a lot of possession time, quality passes, and speed.  It is a soccer team that is beautiful to watch, and efficient, and it was necessary to use a lot of work, determination and Brazilian talent to come out with a victory today”(A impressão do jogo pelo Mario André Mazzuco, dada com admiração pelo adversário foi “O time japonês é muito disciplinado taticamente e tecnicamente, o que dificulta para qualquer adversário.

Coritiba is in first place in Bracket C, with Everton FC in 2nd place.  This game cinched the placement in the semi-finals game against Eintracht Frankfurt at 6pm Friday, April 6.  Everton FC has the Wildcard, and will be playing against Manchester United at 8pm.  It will be a Good Friday indeed for soccer fans in the area.
