Dallas Cup Super Group Preview Chivas Guadalajara

Dallas Cup Super Group Preview: Chivas Guadalajara
By Daniel Robertson

Mexican powerhouse Chivas Guadalajara return to the Dallas Cup Super Group in 2010 after taking a year off in 2009. The Mexican team, known for only fielding Mexican nationals, will look to build on their 2008 Dallas Cup performance in which they finished 0-0-3 drawing all three games.

Chivas Guadalajara is enjoying their best season in years in the Mexican Primera Division sitting at the top of the table having won their first 8 games of the season and currently sitting 2 points above fellow Dallas Cup opponent CF Monterrey. The Chivas team that is coming to the Super Group is a combination of their Segunda Division reserve team, U19 team and U17 team which are all sitting near the top of their respective leagues.

Chivas is bringing one of their most exciting young talents in forward Erick Torres. Torres, who turned just 17 in January, leads the entire Mexican U17 division in goals with a remarkable 21 goals in 21 U17 games for Chivas. He has also featured in one game with the Chivas reserve team with players 3 and 4 years older than him and scored 2 goals.

Chivas will be led in the middle by Saul Sandoval who has started 20 of 21 games for the Chivas U19 team contributing 7 goals from the midfield. Their defense should be very stout as their Dallas Cup team is anchored by Kristian Alvarez and Jairo Gonzalez, two players who went to the 2009 U17 world cup with Mexico. Alvarez played in all four games for the Mexican team that lost in a second round penalty shootout to North Korea and Gonzalez featured in two games. The rest of the Chivas team is a mix of their U19, U17 and Segunda division team with a healthy mix of both youth and players nearing their 20th birthday.

Chivas opens up Dallas Cup on Sunday, March 28th against German Bundesliga side 1899 Hoffenheim at 12PM on PHP field #7 before facing CZ Elite the next day on the same field at the same time. Chivas wraps up the group stage with a showcase Pizza Hut Park stadium game against Brazilians Cruzeiro.
